Notes on the Geography of Peru: Cusco: Photo 3
Ferreting out that stuff takes time and a bit of cheek, if not nerve. In these pictures, we're Baedeker slaves. Translation: we're going to stay at the valley's north end.
In front of us, that's the Plaza Mayor or Plaza de las Armas, perhaps best translated loosely as "parade ground." Two churches stand kitty-corner from each other--the edge of the cathedral is on the left and to its left the Iglesia de la Compañia de Jesus, the Jesuit church. Two blocks to the west there's the Convento de la Merced, and at the upper right there's the Iglesia San Pedro, all of which goes some way toward reminding us just how much the world has changed in a few centuries. If you're wondering what I have in mind, check out the Starbucks wedged between the two churches. (You can't see it here, but it's in that tile-roofed, arcaded white building peeking out at you.)
