In front of us it the Shah Rud, or Royal Canal. It once brought water from the Serafshan River, but there wasn't enough water in the river to keep the flow continuous. Instead, the river was ponded. Several times a month, the dam was broken and the canal filled with water. Branching through the city, it ran along the edge of the city streets, which made travel precarious, especially in wet weather, when the unpaved streets became very slippery. The water itself was diverted to ponds, where it was stored. Running water, however, never reached the gridded core of the city, because it was slightly elevated, which put it out of the canal's reach.","width":1632,"height":1224,"aspect":1.3333,"orientation":"landscape","layoutHint":"wide","srcThumb":"https://wtbl.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/285b8db41cbfd7e491d3d5638bcadac8","srcSmall":"https://wtbl.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/85aafb26fa91b6e6af434d7d402b40e0","srcMedium":"https://wtbl.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/d7c4d7d7e02e2f15838d81ed7403bde9","srcLarge":"https://wtbl.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/97ab60adbfe06022d09fc2a29ca68dba","srcOriginal":"https://wtbl.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/07fd83f581f2ebe3a3a8b82623fe2393","altText":"We're starting near the Lyab-i-Hauz, which is off to the right here.
