And here is the reason for the imambara's existence. It's a taziya representing the tomb of Husain, son of Ali and grandson of the prophet. Thousands of such models are built annually and carried forth from imambaras, generally in the months of Muharram or Safar, especially on the anniversary of Husain's death in A.D. 680. The word taziya comes from an Arabic verb meaning "to mourn."
