Here's the guy who got the ball rolling on the neighborhood surrounding the park. He was an engineer, Uruguayan by birth and German educated. In 1891, with a partner, he bought some local farms and laid out the Avenue Paulista as what we might today call a high-end residential avenue. There was a tram on the street by 1892; asphalt came much later, in 1909.
